Eventful!

Uffda, it's been a long time since I posted! So much has happened in the past months since you've heard from me via "the blog."
Little E man turned 2 last week! He is such a fun little guy - with an attitude... and that is putting it lightly... I should be saying ATTITUDE! He knows what he wants, when he wants it and if things don't go his way, WATCH OUT!!

These are pictures from his birthday weekend - we had so much fun with family and friends visiting and helping him celebrate! We missed those that couldn't make it, but know they were celebrating from afar :)
I have started work up again and so far, it's alright... we are short-staffed again this year, but that hasn't changed in the 4 years I've been there, so honestly, it's not going so bad! I am once again a college student - going to UNO for my Masters in Special Education and Behavior Disorders. I completed two classes this past summer with an A and an A+ (yes, I'm bragging!) These grades are better than I got in my undergrad! I am really enjoying the classes so far and have learned a lot already! I will be a graduate student in the Spring of 2015 and will be interested to see where that takes me.
Easton and mommy had a few interesting days leading up to his birthday. The Wednesday before he turned two (and before family came down to visit), he got sick at daycare. I got a call from Karen saying he was screaming in pain and collapsing to the floor and grabbing at his chest. Eventually, he started vomiting, so I went to pick him up. Luckily, auntie K was still in town and was able to come over to stay with him while I went back to work. I picked up groceries and some sushi for us to eat when Katie called me saying he had blood in his diaper. I got home, thinking it was just in his stool, but it turned out the whole diaper was pure blood. He had another diaper like that 5 minutes later and we quickly packed up his things and the car and went to Children's Hospital ER here in Omaha. They got him in pretty quickly and after the dr. asked me questions and looked at him, she told me she thought he had "Intussesseption" which is where one part of the bowel slides into the other and they stick together, making it difficult for any bowel to get through. If not treated right away, it can start to affect the intestines. We went in for an ultrasound and an x-ray and turns out, that's what it was. We were told the two ways to fix it would either be a procedure where they shoot air up there to try move around the bowel, or surgery. Marcus was out of town and was ready to come back to Omaha if Easton went in to surgery. We met with some doctors and they tried the air procedure. Pretty soon, I see a random man in a white coat talking to Katie. She gives me this strange, scared look, and I just had to focus on Easton so I didn't break down. The doctors and techs and myself held Easton down while they tried the procedure again, and didn't make any progress. At this time, the man in the white coat is telling his resident surgeons to get everyone ready as we will be going in to surgery. We decided to try one more time with the air, and thankfully we got through! His bowel was cleared and now it was time to get admitted into the hospital for observation. Easton was completely lethargic throughout this whole process, and thank goodness for that. We finally go up to our room and settled in for the night, watching Cars until E fell asleep in my arms. Katie came back the following morning and brought us coffee. My father-in-law and his girlfriend also came up to visit and pretty soon, dad was home! We had to get Easton to eat to make sure everything stayed down. When that happened, we were told we could go home, but we would have to monitor him for 72 hours to make sure he didn't start having symptoms as if that were the case, surgery would be our next option. We made it home and Easton quickly returned back to himself!

Oh yeah - we bought a HOUSE! Our very first house! We close on September 9th, so very soon! Marcus and I are very excited to do some updates and make it our own!

Easton has been helping us pack :)

Apologies on the long post - but had to catch you up!

Just Run

Well, it's official - I have signed up for a few runs this spring... the first being the Retro 80's 5k run on April 7th. I think the funnest part is going to be dressing up in 80's attire, haha. The other run I have signed up for is the Fargo Marathon's 10k race with my sister on May 18th. That day should be quite fun as we have the race in the morning and then we are celebrating my future sister-in-laws bachelorette party that evening. I'm pretty excited for all of the festivities!
I ran this morning in 30 degree weather, and it wasn't bad! I just started with a simple 2 miles as I haven't been running in a while. I have been spinning and doing other cardio, which I think helped me with my endurance, but still wanted to keep it small and simple. I think it will be easier to get outside and run with the weather changing (hopefully). Caitlin and I are trying to keep each other motivated to keep up with our weekly runs... now she just needs to get her butt in gear :)
In honor of St. Patrick's Day, I had a heart healthy meal of corned beef and cabbage along with guinness flavored cupcakes and pistachio graham dessert. Oh, I guess a green drink may have been added in there somewhere!
That's my two sense for the day - everyone enjoy your St. Paddy's Day!!

Easter Inspiration

One of my favorite holidays is coming up rather quickly: Easter. Since we have been down here in Omaha, we have started our own family memories. They included grilling some wonderful steaks on the back patio, and spending time with my family at a baseball game last year. I am trying to talk my family in to coming down here again for Easter this year - and am using Easton as a motivator. This year, he will be able to search for eggs around the house that the Easter Bunny left and I have no doubt that the EB will be here on Easter Eve to leave eggs around the house ;) I don't think Easton will be getting as many items as he did last year, but it's the quality, not quantity, that counts and seeing him find eggs around the house will be icing on the cake for this mommy!
Marcus has every intention to make a ham and the whole works. I'm thinking of sticking with our tradition and grilling outside (hopefully this snow will melt and it will be a sunny day) and just doing our own thing that day. If family comes down to celebrate with us, that will be even better!
One staple in our family is making "nests". I actually made them last night to test them out, because I can never make them as good as my mother does. Easton and I will be making these again in a few weeks for the actual occasion.
If you know me well enough, I like then and now pictures... so here is Easton one year ago at Easter (able to sit up by himself) and a current picture of Easton.

DD = dreaded diagnosis

I have trouble even saying this, but today, it was determined or decided (whichever sounds less harsh) that Easton has asthma. I shudder when even saying the word. I kind of knew it may be coming, with last fall E having some respiratory troubles and then having to do a steroid treatment for 3 months at his 15 month appointment. His doctor basically told me he was "borderline" asthmatic. I didn't want to believe that, so I just pretended she never mentioned it, hoping it wouldn't come back up. Then, just a few days ago, Easton started getting a runny nose, which eventually turned in to wheeziness, and then a cough came along. The nurse actually thought he may have croup, but when I brought him in today, they took a listen and were contemplating another chest x-ray. After nebulizer treatments of strong antibiotics, she determined that he does in fact have asthma and his trigger for flare ups is ANYTHING viral. Whenever he gets the common cold, or even a runny nose, we have to be prepared that he will have, in lamens terms, an "asthma attack" or very bad wheeziness, which will scare us every time, but we just need to wait it through with stronger nebulizer medicines. I was in denial earlier because I look at my little boy and see no imperfections. To me, he is absolutely the most perfect little man that I could have ever hoped for. After some tears and a "come to Jesus" meeting with myself, I concluded that asthma is the LEAST of my/our worries. Life could be SO much worse for Easton and our family, and if asthma is the worst thing we have to worry about, then we are in good shape. It was difficult to turn that negative in to a positive, but really, I have no other choice. I can't change the fact that he has asthma, all I can do is hope that he will be in the percentage that grows out of it. AND, who knows.. maybe he will, but if he doesn't, we will manage and be okay :)
I don't have much else to say about the topic, as I am still grasping it, but I just needed to write it out - which I hope will help :)

Farewell to 2012!

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Wow, what a year it has been! I personally love this time of year, because I am able to reflect upon the previous year and really realize how blessed I am to have what I have and to be where I'm at. With that, I cannot wait to see what 2013 has to offer :)

E continues to be the biggest blessing we have been given and we couldn't imagine our life without him. He is the sweetest, most loving, humorous, sensitive little boy I have ever met.

E couldn't make it until midnight

Here are some of my resolutions for the new year:
* Get my paperwork/application in and go back to school in the fall
* Continue making E my priority, but spending more quality time with my husband
* Work harder to make exercise and eating healthy a part of my daily routine.
* Be a role model that my mother would be proud of (for E, my husband, family, friends, students)

That's about it for this year - I have found that if I make too many resolutions, they get pushed to the side... so I think 4 is a good start :)

I hope everyone has a great New Years Day and an even greater 2013! Here is my wish for all that I love:

“I hope that in this year to come, you make mistakes.

Because if you are making mistakes, then you are making new things, trying new things, learning, living, pushing yourself, changing yourself, changing your world. You're doing things you've never done before, and more importantly, you're Doing Something.

So that's my wish for you, and all of us, and my wish for myself. Make New Mistakes. Make glorious, amazing mistakes. Make mistakes nobody's ever made before. Don't freeze, don't stop, don't worry that it isn't good enough, or it isn't perfect, whatever it is: art, or love, or work or family or life.Whatever it is you're scared of doing, Do it.Make your mistakes, next year and forever.” ― Neil Gaiman
